Dear Al:

	Alan Miller is a graduate student in computer science here,
who wants to work on character recognition as his PhD dissertation
topic under my supervision.  He will be ready to start in January.

	Would III be willing to support his work on this topic
by financing a half time research assistantship during the academic
year and possibly a full time assistantship during the summer?
You might want to offer him the option of working at III during
the summer.

	The approach he will take to the problem is not yet determined,
since he is still studying previous work.
However, I have been suggesting that he explore using a vidicon camera
to get gray level pictures and plan on mechanical scanning to make up
for limited resolution if necessary.  The ideal would be a microprocessor
based attachment to a large computer that would enable a secretary to
be told to read in a letter or other document received from the outside.

	III support would give III an inside track on work that will
be valuable if Miller is successful.  I am also sure that III's experience
will help Miller.
